Where does this stuff come from?

The other day we needed a small piece of green gold (yes, it comes in green now) and a custom-cut fancy shaped diamond to finish a job for a customer.  Two phone calls and three days later we had both, completed the job, and shipped the ring off to the customer.  It was so fast and effortless for us to get two of the world’s most precious items (to say nothing of the special ways in which we needed them) that sometimes I forget how truly rare and difficult it is to find and produce the items we trade in every day.

Traffic wasn't moving on the highway, so I got off a few exits early and headed to the "downtown" area and dropped in at my friend Mike's jewelry store.  Like a lot of downtowns across the country, this one has seen better times, with many of the merchants having closed or leaving for the mall back by the interstate.

I love watching talented retail jewelers work the counter.  I went up to Palm Beach the other day to have lunch with my friend Randy.  She has a beautiful boutique in the fancy part of town and caters to the up-scale crowd.  When I got there, she was already well into her presentation with a customer, so I parked myself out of the way, but close enough to listen in.

24 Karat Corner: Every Year

When things get quiet in the office, as they often do at this time of year, I like to call a friend of mine who runs a jewelry store in the Florida Keys. He always has an interesting story to tell, and while we sometimes talk business, more often than not, we talk about business.
