GIA’s annual Board and Research meetings bring together international experts

GIA 4 26Board welcomes Barbara Dutrow and Stephen Kahler; honors Aron Suna and Hank Siegel for their 16 years of combined service

(CARLSBAD, Calif.) - GIA’s Board of Governors inducted Dr. Barbara Dutrow, Adolphe G. Gueymard Professor of Geology at Louisiana State University; and Stephen Kahler, senior vice president of global sales operations for Swarovski Gemstones, as its newest members during its November 2016 board meeting held at the Institute’s Carlsbad, Calif. headquarters. Dione Kenyon, recently-retired president and CEO of The Jewelers Board of Trade, was elected Chair of the GIA Board of Governors, seceding John Green, president and CEO of Lux Bond & Green jewelers, who remains on the board. Aron Suna and Hank Siegel, who retired from the board during the annual meeting, were honored for their years of dedicated service. Glenn Nord, former president of GIA and a member of the board since 1983, was named Governor Emeritus.


ASA announces Appraising Gems & Jewelry for Advanced Assignments: Development and Report Writing

GJ203 is a required course for accreditation as a Gems and Jewelry appraiser in the American Society of Appraisers (ASA). The advanced curriculum builds on the terminology and valuation theory learned in PG201 and GJ202. The material covered in GJ203 includes topics not taught in previous GJ Principles of Valuation (PoV) courses, such as analyzing comparable sales results and writing a convincing argument supporting the value conclusion. The course provides students with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and confidence required to complete challenging assignments such as appraising for estate tax, equitable distribution or insurance loss claim.

Stephen Webster to host the 2017 GEM Awards

(NEW YORK) - Jewelers of America (JA), a national trade association for businesses serving the fine jewelry marketplace, has announced that acclaimed jewelry designer Stephen Webster will host the 15th Annual GEM Awards on Friday, January 13, 2017, at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York. Jewelers of America’s GEM Awards is a premier industry accolade gala, which recognizes the achievements of individuals and companies whose work raises the visibility and status of fine jewelry and watches.

Mediterranean Gem and Jewellery Conference slated for Italy in 2017

The success of the Mediterranean Gem and Jewellery Conference (MGJC) in Greece 2015 and Spain 2016 has demanded that next year a third Conference will be held.

In 2017 the Mediterranean venue will be Syracuse, Italy on May 11-14, and will be organized by IGL Greece, CGL-GRS Canada in conjunction with CERTILINE Italy and supported by NAJA USA.

MJSA to present Bench and Business seminars at AGTA GemFair Tucson

MJSAMJSA, the trade association dedicated to professional excellence in jewelry making and design, will debut a new seminar series, “At the Bench and Beyond,” at the 2017 AGTA GemFair Tucson. Running twice daily from Jan. 31 to Feb. 3 in GemFair’s Tools, Technology, and Supplies pavilion, the sessions will cover topics ranging from bench repair and production techniques to the art of communicating through words and pictures.
