“Health is our greatest wealth.” Or so the saying goes. But can good health actually lead to more wealth? What is peak health? Is it just the absence of disease or something more?
When we’re young, the world’s our oyster. Life’s possibilities are limitless. The young think they’re immortal, that they’ll never get sick. As our capacities diminish with age our vision narrows. Life’s possibilities start to shrink. Boundaries become more rigid. But how much of this is due to the passage of time and how much is due to our choices in lifestyle, our habits?
If you don’t regularly change the oil in your car’s engine and have it tuned, it begins to function at less than full capacity. It’s not just the passage of time but the lack of optimum maintenance that causes the deterioration. Change your mind, change your life.
Living in radiant good health is truly tapping the fountain of youth. “Mens sana in copore sano” was the ideal of the ancients – “A sound mind in a sound body.” Health is not just the absence of pain and disease, but functioning at peak capacity both mentally and physically. It’s not just about longevity, but about the quality of life.
To the ancient Greeks living well was a skill. Just as we can develop skills in particular areas – we can become a master goldsmith or top salesperson – we can also develop skill in living. We can learn to live well, with excellence, arete. For Plato this was the most important issue in life. Aristotle thought it the basis of happiness. Living the good life is life in balance. Radiant good health is living the golden mean.
When we’re healthy we’re like a well-oiled, finely tuned engine, running on all cylinders, turbo-charged. Can operating this way at maximum capacity help in increasing wealth? You bet. Is it only for the young? Not necessarily.
Health’s reward is not just vibrant vitality but an increased capacity for wealth. Health is the basis for wealth because the qualities of a healthy person – energy, creativity, efficiency, clarity, flexibility, optimism – are just the traits needed for maximum productivity. The greater capacity we’re operating with, the greater our possibility for success.
When you’ve had a good night’s sleep, are well rested and refreshed, everything seems to go easier. When we’re tired, stressed, not thinking clearly, everything’s an obstacle. Our world’s a reflection of ourself. We’ve all experienced moments when we’re in “the zone” – relaxed, energized, operating at top capacity. Everything falls into place. We make that incredible sale. We have a breakthrough marketing idea to take our business to the next level. We’re operating at peak efficiency. This is real health. The more we can live at this level, the greater our possibility for success. It’s health for wealth.
With age comes experience. Along the way we make choices and learn from those experiences. We develop an edge that youth has not yet honed. If we can operate with the peak vitality of youth plus the discrimination born of experience, we have the best of both worlds – health plus wisdom. It’s the time-honored goal, to be “healthy, wealthy and wise”.
