Strolling through the woods on a clear, crisp fall day, you’re surrounded by golden, crimson foliage. Shards of dappled light stream down from above. Vibrant, alive, your spirit soars. You’re inspired.
Supercharged moments offer glimpses of heightened awareness. Colors are more vivid. Our senses are super receptive, flooded in bliss. Suddenly we wake up, a new life breathed into us.
Poets and artists describe inspiration – “having life breathed into” – as the fount of their creative process. This experience may be so concrete it’s personified as visitation by muse or goddess, the embodiment of the divine spark. Homer opens The Iliad, “Sing, goddess, of the wrath of Achilles….”, invoking celestial inspiration to flow through him as the source of his immortal epic. From Dante’s Beatrice to Dr. Zhivago’s Lara, the muse is the source of creative inspiration, transcending mere physical form and achieving an elevated, immortal status. Inspiration’s a summoning up and a letting go, an infusion by the power of nature, expanding and magnifying us. It’s life, supercharged.
The beauty of nature itself often ignites the process. “My heart leaps up when I behold a rainbow in the sky….” (Wordsworth). Nature beckons. When we’re receptive and ripe we can walk thru that open door, resonate with a higher frequency, creating a new reality. Beauty, music, art – all can act as catalysts. Visiting an art museum – literally, a place where muses reside – can switch creativity on.
Surround yourself by what moves you. Find what works. Inspiration is key not only in art, but also in science and business, in every sphere of human activity. It’s at the core of our humanity – our connection with a greater force that moves and directs life itself. “The force that thru the green fuse drives the flower drives my green age….” (Dylan Thomas). Tapping the well of creativity adds power. It promotes success. As Archimedes relaxed in his bath, noticing the displacement of water, he suddenly solved the scientific problem he’d been grappling with. As he let go the solution appeared in an inspired flash – “Eureka!”
In scientific circles breakthroughs often result from the creative imagination. The scientist may be blocked, wrestling with a problem with no solution in sight. As he surrenders, nature floods in, offering the solution from an expanded level. Leibniz and Newton co-discovered calculus simultaneously. In the progression of the human spirit a new understanding or awakening may be ripe to reveal itself. The most receptive tune in and grasp that new reality. Such is inspiration in science. “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” (Einstein)
Artists and scientists describe a fluid state of awareness that’s a fertile soil for creativity. It may be the actual dream state, or that magical netherworld between dreaming and waking, or a state of “daydreaming.” James Watson discovered the double helix structure of DNA in a dream. Karl Jung described our “collective unconscious,” the fecund repository of universal archetypes we access below the threshold of our conscious mind. It’s all around us. We’re surrounded by wells of endless creativity. We just have to remove the blinders. “If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.” (Aldous Huxley, derived from William Blake)
Your own vision, your dream, is unique. By resonating with a higher frequency – nature’s full power – you manifest that reality you glimpse. Through the power of attention, of synchronicity, what we put our attention on grows stronger. Several swinging pendulums in close proximity will begin to move together thru the process of entrainment. We can tune into a higher frequency thru our attention and synchronize with it, manifesting our unique vision.
Creative entrepreneurs such as Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg think outside the box. “Entrepreneurial business favors the open mind” (Richard Branson). The most creative, most successful, march to the tune of a different drummer. Aligning with their own vision they manifest it. They glimpse a reality and bring it to fruition. It’s the result of a powerful mind, a mind utilizing the full force of nature. This too is inspiration.
