Thai government promotes Thai gems & jewelry industry and SMEs (small & medium-sized enterprises) to reinforce position as regional gems & jewelry hub

The 62nd Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair reported overwhelming success with the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) revealing that sales at the fair totaled 2,389.74 million baht (over $73 million USD), exceeding their target. Buyers worldwide expressed interest and admiration for jewelry made by up-and-coming brands as well as Thai SMEs, generating immediate sales and opportunities to become trade partners in the future.

Bangkok two

The 62nd Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair was held under the theme “Heritage & Craftsmanship” from September 7-11 at Challenger Halls 1-3, IMPACT, Muang Thong Thani. With visitors coming from 107 countries around the world, the top five visiting countries were India, China, Myanmar, USA and Vietnam. This edition of the fair welcomed 914 exhibiting companies in 2,066 booths, of which 800 were Thai companies. Within this group, 150 were new brands and SMEs from 18 provinces across Thailand. Overseas exhibitors came from countries worldwide such as Hong Kong, Poland, Turkey, Japan, Singapore, India and Taiwan.

Products with the highest value of trade generated at the fair were: Gemstones – 41.2%, Gold Jewelry – 13.7%, Diamonds – 9.3%, Silver Jewelry – 9.1% and Machinery – 8.9%.

Buyers and visitors to the 62nd Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair participated in activities as well as special zones at the fair such as The Niche Showcase which presented jewelry for 5 niche markets, The New Faces which showcased 150 exhibitors who are Thai SMEs, The Jewellers which presented creative and innovative products from brands that had participated in the Talent Thai and Designers’ Room project, Creative Jewelry which was an exhibition of jewelry from 40 brands that had developed their products with gems and jewelry design experts to produce jewelry with brand stories and unique new gimmicks, and Innovation and Design Zone that featured the Closer installation, utilizing cutting-edge interactive projection technology where audiences viewed their jewelry in 360 degrees on a large screen.

Moreover, the fair offered jewelry demonstrations by experienced artisans from the Thai Goldsmith Association, as well as seminars and consultations from experts and business matching activities.

Bangkok three

DITP Director-General, Mrs. Chantira Jimreivat Vivatrat, stated: “This edition of the fair proved to be very successful. Our exhibitors held negotiations with both new and existing trade partners while overseas buyers were highly interested in The New Faces zone that featured up-and-coming brands and Thai SMEs. Thai entrepreneurs that joined DITP project were able to sell their products at the fair and meet potential overseas buyers who are likely to place orders in the future that will ultimately have a positive effect for the manufacturing sector and export sector for the Thai gems and jewelry industry.”

For the first 7 months of 2018, exports of gems and jewelry from Thailand (excluding unwrought gold) increased by 6.93% compared to the same period of last year with a continuously increasing trend expected for 2019.

The 63rd Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair will be held February 20-24 at Challenger Halls 1-3, IMPACT, Muang Thong Thani. For inquiries and applications, please visit www.bkkgems.com.
