Reading Time: 3 minutes

(CARLSBAD, Calif.) – GIA (Gemological Institute of America) presents a unique seminar that teaches the assessment of jewelry design and engineering to identify manufacturing methods, workmanship and risk of failure. Professionals will learn the 12-step forensic methodology process to evaluate how jewelry is made based on GIA’s Quality Assurance Benchmarks (QABs) for assessing workmanship.

The two-and a half-day Jewelry Forensics seminar, led by experienced GIA instructors, offers hands-on exercises along with detailed education materials. For more information and to register, visit: https://www.gia.edu/jewelry-forensics-seminar.

“The new Jewelry Forensics seminar has been really well received,” said Elizabeth Brehmer, GIA technical advisor of Jewelry Manufacturing Arts. “Participants leave with usable information and practical techniques for assessing the quality of new or vintage jewelry and how to effectively communicate their assessment of the jewelry’s engineering and workmanship.”

The Jewelry Forensics seminar will be offered at GIA’s world headquarters in Carlsbad, California. The first session will be held Aug. 5-7 followed by a session Oct. 21-23.

The seminar also covers the characteristics of precious metals and their compatibility with jewelry manufacturing. Seminar participants will receive a Jewelry Forensics guidebook including the 12-step process of evaluation, glossary of terms and a thumb drive with supplemental reference and jewelry case study information.

“This seminar offers a unique opportunity for jewelry professionals of all skill levels to identify how jewelry is made from the trace indicators that remain,” said Duncan Pay, GIA vice president and chief academic officer. “This new seminar is driven by our mission to ensure the public trust and provide the highest standards through education.”

In addition to the Jewelry Forensics seminar, GIA in Carlsbad is offering two lab classes on jewelry repair and setting. The Basic Repair and Setting Lab Class (https://www.gia.edu/gem-education/course-jewelry-repair-setting-basic-carlsbad) is available Aug. 12-26 and the Intermediate Repair and Setting Lab Class (https://www.gia.edu/gem-education/course-jewelry-repair-setting-intermediate-carlsbad) is available Aug. 19-23.
