On January 28 an electronic billboard was hacked on busy Washington Road in Augusta, GA. Words were changed and vulgar pictures were displayed on the hacked ads.
Among the ads was one from an Augusta jewelry store. The billboard displayed a stacked set of bracelets and the words were altered to read, “Look at that nice-a** jewelery. F****** sweet, isn’t it.”
The hack was no laughing matter for the billboard’s owner, Chris Withers. WRDW News 12 in Augusta reported Withers said, “We immediately had to take this computer down off this billboard and replace it with a new one. Then we are going to have to go in and buy this managed software that will protect us and that’s going to cost me $2,000 a year.” That’s on top of the $10,000 he paid for new computers and an upgraded system to fix the problem to try to prevent future issues.
