Carol Young, executive director of the Atlanta Jewelry Show, takes a few minutes to let us know what we have to look forward to at the upcoming show, August 6-8. Register online at www.atlantajewelryshow.com.
SJN: If it’s August, it’s the Atlanta Jewelry Show!
CY: Yes, it is, and we are so excited about this show.
SJN: What are some of the challenges confronting independent jewelers today?
CY: How much time do you have? Seriously, one of the biggest challenges may be just that – time. It takes time to manage day-to-day store operations, keep salespeople motivated, stay up-to-date on new bench technology, and on top of it all, figure out how to dive into social media.
SJN: How is the Atlanta Jewelry Show meeting the needs of independent jewelers?
CY: First, we listen. We’re all in this together, and to help them we have to hear them.
SJN: What are some of the things you’ve implemented that came about from listening?
CY: There’s so much. We’ve created seminars that provide valuable information that our retailers can take back to their store, and programs that add value. For example, AJS Rewards is our buyer loyalty program that lets retailers earn points for purchases made at the show, and then redeem points for hotel and travel packages, gift cards and more. It’s a great way to be rewarded for purchases that they’re making anyway.
SJN: Your seminars are offered under the umbrella AJS U. Is this another way that you are responding to what retailers are telling you that they need and want?
CY: Absolutely. Who has time to reach out to experts one-on-one? We bring the experts to the retailer. Our speakers will be presenting topics from creating revenue with laser engravers to improving customer engagement to how to spot a counterfeit watch. And, of course, we’ll be looking at how to maximize every aspect of store operations and promotions in a challenging economy.
SJN: Is registration required to attend the seminars?
CY: We want everyone – the speakers and the attendees – to have a great experience, so we recommend registering in advance. It helps us to prepare.
SJN: Tell us about the jewelry we’ll see at the show.
CY: That’s what it’s all about, right? We like to say ‘If its’ new, it’s here’ and that is certainly true in August. We’ve got a strong line-up of new exhibitors and great new products from longstanding participants. Our New Resources Gallery is inspirational. And of course, we are the South and we like tradition, so the classics are here and better than ever.
SJN: What thoughts would you like to leave with our readers?
CY: First and foremost, we appreciate the opportunity to work with this great community of retailers and exhibitors. We’re a family. We want everyone to be successful. If you’ve not had the chance to attend, make this your year. We can’t wait to see everyone at the show August 6-8!
