Every June college baseball powerhouses like LSU, Vanderbilt, Virginia and South Carolina head to Omaha for the College World Series. This year those teams stumbled and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers crashed the party and took home the hardware. And, every year for the past ten, Matt, Sheila and their son Chad Powell of Perspective Jewelry Design in Omaha have been designing custom gold, silver and enameled baseballs for the coach’s families, team moms and fans.
This year’s College World Series featured some fresh faces along with Omaha regulars like Florida, Miami and TCU. “It was just so much fun to meet the families and watch those kids in their first CWS appearance run the field and take home the National Championship,” Matt says, speaking of Coastal Carolina. “While they might not have brought the biggest fan base to Omaha, they probably brought the most motivated.” All of this has been great for business and now with the addition of Coastal Carolina National Championship merchandise, sales have been brisk.
Matt freely admits he didn’t purposefully or strategically branch out his fine jewelry business into a new genre. He was, however, quick to recognize its potential. And from this Perspective Jewelry has added an entire sub-business – Argent Sports – featuring officially licensed NCAA and College World Series jewelry.
“The sports jewelry is something that we just sort of fell into,” he says. “We developed a cool product, there was customer demand for it, and we’ve just taken off and ran with it.
“We’re artisans in that we know how to do it all. We design it, we build the models and prototypes, we cast the pieces and set the stones. We can do all the other work involved with it,” he says. “It’s really all, start-to-finish, us.
“We found something that people responded and reacted to, and we took that and built on it. We kept fine-tuning it and adjusting, and through that feedback loop, we developed a product line that works,” Matt says, explaining that the direct interaction with clients visiting during the CWS was another advantageous factor in Argent’s growth.
Currently Argent Sports has over 30 licenses and two years ago were invited to design and manufacture jewelry for the College Football Playoff.
You can reach Argent Sports at 712-642-2899, argentsports.com or see them at the Atlanta Jewelry Show in August.
