GIA introduces Cultured Pearl Classification Report

Classification based on the GIA 7 Pearl Value Factors™

January 13, 2021

GIA has announced the introduction of the GIA Cultured Pearl Classification Report. The Cultured Pearl Classification Report is an abbreviated report that provides classification information on unmodified cultured pearls.

The dossier-sized report includes a detailed classification of the submitted pearl(s) based on the GIA 7 Pearl Value Factors™ as well as a digital image of the submitted item(s). It is specifically and exclusively for the three major types of cultured pearls (Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian), with no identification or advanced testing of the pearl(s) being performed. If a pearl is found by GIA gemologists as being modified by treatment (except routine processes) or as not belonging to one of the accepted pearl types, the pearl service will automatically change to a pearl identification report. Submitted pearls may be loose, mounted, strung, or in a fixed design layout for a strand or jewelry item.

Service Components

Cultured Pearl Classification service includes the GIA report with:

  • A detailed classification of cultured pearl(s) based on the GIA 7 Pearl Value Factors™ (size, shape, color, luster, surface, nacre and matching)
  • A digital image of the submitted item(s)

Submission Criteria:

  • This service is only for cultured and untreated Akoya, South Sea, and Tahitian pearls.
  • Routinely processed pearls are acceptable.
  • Up to 10 related loose pearls may be submitted per report. Loose pearls must be visually related to each other (i.e., similar colors, shapes, sizes, etc.).
  • This is a Classification Report only.
  • There are no tests for identification or treatment.
  • It is not applicable for random testing.
  • Pearls that are not qualified for this service will be changed to a Pearl Identification Service.
