GIA has announced the release of the Spring 2023 edition of their quarterly professional journal Gems & Gemology (G&G). In the new volume, discover the characteristics and mining history of sapphires from Montana and the growth mechanisms of morphological features in Colombian emeralds. Additionally, the Spring 2023 issue features a Tucson Gem Show recap, and the winner of the journal’s Dr. Edward J. Gübelin Most Valuable Article Award. G&G’s regular features – Lab Notes, Micro-World, Diamond Reflections, and Gem News International – continue to highlight interesting gemological findings worldwide.

Examines the mining history and geological characteristics of the three secondary sapphire deposits in the state of Montana, as well as the properties of these sapphires (unheated and heat-treated).
Karl Schmetzer and Gérard Martayan
Evaluates the growth mechanisms of special morphological features in Colombian emerald, including possible relationships to trapiche emeralds and samples displaying the gota de aceite effect.
