A Name Is Born
On 26 August 1953, Auguste Piccard’s bathyscaphe Trieste descended to approximately 1,080 meters beneath the Mediterranean, south of Capri. The achievement captured attention far beyond the scientific community and reflected a growing fascination with underwater exploration.
Just ten days later, on September 5, 1953, Jean-Jacques Fiechter, then CEO of Blancpain and himself a passionate diver, registered the name Bathyscaphe with the Swiss Commercial Office. It was a remarkably entrepreneurial move. As Fiechter finalized the development of the Fifty Fathoms watch, he was not only solving the technical challenges of diving; he was also anticipating the world that would grow around it. By securing the Bathyscaphe name, he gave that vision an identity.

A New Generation Takes the Plunge
While pioneers such as the Piccards pushed the limits of deep-sea exploration, recreational diving brought the underwater world within reach of a new public. Fiechter was himself part of this emerging generation. He understood that a diving watch need not be reserved for military and professional use. His vision extended to the enthusiast: a watch robust and capable underwater, yet versatile enough for everyday life. In 1956, that vision took form with the introduction of the Bathyscaphe, the civilian counterpart to the Fifty Fathoms.
