(CHARLESTON, S.C.) – Croghan’s Jewel Box, Charleston’s oldest family-owned jewelry store and a beloved fixture on King Street since 1907, is proud to announce its relocation to a new, larger storefront at 155 King Street, just a few blocks south of its original home. This milestone represents not only a physical expansion but also a bold, forward-looking evolution of a century-old brand rooted in craftsmanship, family, and Southern hospitality.
A Legacy Reimagined
Founded by master jeweler and hand engraver William Joseph Croghan, Croghan’s Jewel Box has been in the care of his descendants for generations. Today, third-generation sisters Mariana Ramsay Hay and Rhett Ramsay Outten lead the business alongside their fourth-generation family members Kathleen Hay Hagood, Mini Hay Avant, and Mikell Hay. Together, the family maintains its legacy of commitment to excellence in jewelry, service, and community engagement.
Over the decades, Croghan’s has become synonymous with heirloom-quality pieces, estate treasures, and a warm, personalized shopping experience that has helped generations mark life’s milestones – both grand and everyday. The shop also showcases curated designer collections, including longtime partners Temple St. Clair, Elizabeth Locke, Marla Aaron, and Single Stone.

“We’ve always believed in infusing beauty into people’s lives – whether through a treasured heirloom or a piece that celebrates a meaningful moment,” said Outten. “Our move to 155 King Street allows us to continue doing what we love in a space that reflects who we are and where we’re going.”
“This expansion is a testament to our family’s enduring commitment to Charleston,” added Hay. “We’re thrilled to welcome both longtime patrons and new visitors into our new home with the same warmth and quality that have defined Croghan’s for over a century.”
About the New Location
Croghan’s new 6,000-square-foot, two-story flagship is located on King Street near the corner of Queen Street in the heart of the historic district. Landmark neighbors on the block include the Preservation Society of Charleston shop, the Charleston Library Society, and clothier Ben Silver.
Highlights include:
- Expanded showroom featuring antique, estate, and contemporary collections, including the in-house Croghan’s Exclusives and fourth-generation Mini Hay Avant’s jewelry designs: the Goldbug Collection and the Mini Collection of exclusive fine jewelry pieces
- Dedicated areas for custom design and jewelry repair
- Enhanced workspace for Croghan’s five expert bench jewelers and four certified gemologists
Although fourth-generation family members Kathleen, Mini, and Mikell joined the business only in the twenty-first century, they played a significant role in the renovation project. The siblings were instrumental in bringing the new space to life. Together, they collaborated closely on all aspects of the project. The result is a thoughtfully designed space that elevates the client experience while honoring the store’s classic charm, including bespoke lighting fixtures from Charleston-based The Urban Electric Co. and custom exterior awning poles and interior stair railings crafted by local ironworkers.
A Jewel of the Community
More than a store, Croghan’s is a Charleston institution – interwoven into the cultural and philanthropic fabric of the city. The Croghan family has long supported local arts, civic initiatives, and charitable causes.
