Key takeaways
• PhotoScribe Technologies introduced PermaScribe™, a service that places transparent, invisible trust marks directly on a diamond’s table.
• Unlike traditional girdle inscriptions, table marks are easier to locate, remain visible after mounting, and carry higher security against forgery.
• The transparent mark preserves the diamond’s brilliance and clarity, serving as a permanent physical link to its verified identity.
PhotoScribe Technologies has introduced PermaScribe™, a new diamond-marking service that gives natural diamonds a permanent, consumer-facing identity through transparent marks placed directly on the table.

The service comes as the natural diamond industry places renewed emphasis on consumer confidence, product differentiation and clearer distinction between natural and laboratory-grown diamonds. Recent industry initiatives toward a globally recognized natural diamond trust mark reflect growing interest in creating a meaningful identifier that remains permanently connected to the stone.
Traditional diamond inscriptions are generally placed on the girdle. These contrasting microscopic marks suit grading-report numbers, serial numbers, and technical identification. However, the girdle’s limited area and peripheral location restrict the size, accessibility and branding potential of the inscription.
Instead of placing another identifier on the edge of the diamond, PermaScribe creates a larger, transparent mark at the center of the table, where it can be located quickly and viewed with the appropriate equipment.
The mark is invisible to the naked eye and does not detract from the diamond’s clarity, brilliance, or beauty. Unlike conventional dark inscriptions, it contains no black graphitization. Under reflected bright-field or differential interference contrast (DIC) illumination, the mark becomes visible at relatively low magnification.
Its surface profile exists on an extraordinarily small scale — on the order of one-tenth the wavelength of visible light and thousands of times shallower than the thickness of a human hair.
“A serial number uniquely identifies a diamond, but a brand mark gives it an identity,” said David Benderly, President and CEO of PhotoScribe Technologies. “The girdle is the appropriate location for grading-report numbers and serialization. The center of the table provides something different: a dedicated location for the consumer-facing trust mark, brand logo, or message that represents who stands behind the diamond.”
The table location also provides a practical advantage. A mark positioned at the center of the diamond is considerably easier to locate than a small inscription placed somewhere along the girdle. It can remain accessible after the diamond is mounted and is not hidden behind prongs or a bezel setting.
PermaScribe also increases security by creating a higher barrier to forgery, since reproducing a transparent table mark requires specialized equipment, precise process control and advanced technical expertise.
A physical mark alone does not establish whether a diamond is natural or laboratory-grown. However, when used within an authorized program and linked to a grading report, provenance record, verification system or brand platform, PermaScribe can create a permanent physical link between the diamond and its verified identity.
PermaScribe is available through PhotoScribe’s New Jersey laboratory and an affiliated laboratory in India. The service is intended for laboratories, manufacturers, brands, retailers and industry organizations that wish to pilot, evaluate or adopt transparent table marking without acquiring and operating dedicated marking equipment.
